The project, which had been in development for over a decade, faced a series of delays and course changes. Originally conceived to offer fully autonomous driving, the ambitions of the Apple Car were scaled back over time, with the company now reportedly focusing its efforts on generative artificial intelligence rather than vehicles.

The original production forecasts for the Apple Car were constantly pushed back, with the latest report suggesting production might only begin in 2028, if at all.

Initially planned to offer Level 5 autonomy, the project was adjusted to lower levels of automation due to technological and logistical challenges. Apple’s shift in focus to generative AI indicates a significant strategic change for the company, which is now looking to explore other areas of innovation beyond electric vehicles.

This change in direction may also reflect the unique challenges Apple faces in trying to enter a highly competitive and complex market, where other established companies are leading the way in terms of electric vehicle technology and autonomous driving.
